In January was my last day at my job. In November I gave them my two months’ notice as I was getting more and more academic opportunities and I was not able anymore to combine them with my job.
It is kind of nerve-wrecking to quit a job in this situation. I am a millennial, have just graduated from Literary Studies and was extremely lucky to be offered a job right away. To throw all of that security away to write a dissertation for the next four years with very insecure funding, is quite a step. I also realise I am very privileged to be able to do this, because I would never have been able to if it wasn’t not just for the emotional, but also financial support of my husband.
Luckily, I have some great projects coming up that will hopefully help me to get some funds as well! I am working on a few publications and applications to give some more lectures. I also want to see if it’s possible for me to get some experience in teaching Afrikaans literature.
Quitting my job also means I can combine all this with a much greener lifestyle, which is very important to me. Before I started working, I had my house almost completely plastic free and I look forward to taking up that project again!
Go for is, Francine!
